Perceptions of Pacha - DJ Kiko Navarro
Pacha is THE best known name in nightclubs around the world. Since its original location in Ibiza was founded in 1972, the club has grown to 22 nightclubs dotted around the world from New York to Ibiza and from Buenos Aires to Munich. Not only are there clubs but Pacha also runs a magazine, two restaurants, a hotel, a clothing line and a record label. Over time, the Pacha name has become synonymous with all that is stylish, hedonistic and fabulous. Swank Recordings have partnered with Pacha for this first CD release.
Kiko’s debut album is a start-to-end listening experience, sequenced like a seamless DJ mix. The music has an organic, live feel to it, reminiscent of Masters At Work’s “NuYorican Soul” album and has influences from Latin and Afro house to classic Salsoul disco.
Late Night With Groove Junkies - Groove Junkies
Welcome to the 3rd volume in the “Late Night With” series. This compilation series spotlights the nocturnal sounds spun by the world’s top DJs and this latest edition has been compiled and mixed by the legendary Groove Junkies. This is Los Angeles-based Groove Junkies 5th CD release in as many years and is a testament to their exploding popularity. Always in demand and with a solid year-round touring schedule, the Groove Junkie’s fanbase is growing daily.
This mix features massive club hits from Mr V, Dennis Ferrer and Kiko Navarro as well as showcasing several original productions and remixes from the Groove Junkies themselves. Soulful and uplifting house at its finest.

This week’s Friday Playlist comes from excellent blogger Kelly Phillips Erb. Kelly writes LawMummy - and from there you can also reach her other online endeavors. I give Kelly the award of Blogger Able to Write about Taxes in a Way That’s Both Informative and Entertaining. (Maybe I should work on that award title…)
Kelly called up this random playlist for us. Enjoy her notes on each song, too!
Beautiful Again - Martina McBride. I grew up in NC and I love country music. Martina is one of those who has managed to remain fresh and modern without selling out. She has an amazing voice. I could listen to her all day.
Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol. This is one of my favorite songs right now. I just love the melody, it’s very haunting.
Twelve Days of Christmas - Kermit the Frog. It had to happen - I mean, coming up on random. I still have a lot of Christmas music in my shuffle because my kids have refused to let it go. My two year old is particularly into this one. I can’t even skip by it on the iPod without hearing, “Waaa-it! That’s Kermit the Frog.” Damn frog.
Amazing, Because It Is The Almost. I just heard these guys a couple of weeks ago and I bought almost every song on the album one by one. They’re really cool.
18 and Life - Skid Row. {shudder} My dirty secret is out. I grew up in the 80s. I like pop music and hair bands. I wore chiffon scarves in my hair and rubber bracelets up my arms. Like everyone else of my generation, I practiced lip syncing “Holiday” with a hairbrush in front of the mirror. Sigh. I kind of miss that. Where’s my hairbrush…?
Thanks so much, Kelly!

A selection of current books about music…
“When Muddy Waters came to London at the start of the 1960s, a kid from Boston called Joe Boyd was his tour manager; when Dylan went electric at the Newport Festival, Joe Boyd was plugging in his guitar; when the summer of love got going, Joe Boyd was running UFO, the coolest club in London; when a bunch of club regulars called Pink Floyd recorded their first single, Joe Boyd was the producer; when a young songwriter named Nick Drake wanted to give his demo tape to someone, he chose Joe Boyd.”
White Bicycles came out earlier this year and has been hailed as a fantastic journey back to the music scene of the 1960s - and also a a great read. Naturally, there’s also an album of the same name featuring the bands from the book. Sounds like a great pair to buy together.
“Once a confessional form of punk rock that was as emotional as it was loud, emo is now an undeniable cultural phenomenon with its own accompanying language, style, and ideology.
By tracing the scene’s angst-y roots from William Shakespeare to bands who dress like William Shakespeare (cough—Panic! at the Disco—cough), coauthors Leslie Simon and Trevor Kelley have created the definitive handbook for the heart-on-your-sleeve set.
Touching on topics such as fashion and the Internet, music and movies, and eating habits and adulthood, Everybody Hurts successfully identifies what it means to be emo in the present tense.”
Very recently released, Everybody Hurts is a guide to -and sympathetically humorous look at - emo culture. If you consider yourself emo or know someone who does, give this book a try for a fun read.
And a few quick mentions:
Darker Than the Deepest Sea: The Search for Nick Drake by Trevor Dann
Iggy Pop: Open Up and Bleed by Paul Trynka
