The Chemical Brothers- We Are The Night

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

We Are The Night, the new album by UK electronic legends The Chemical Brothers, does not disappoint. By sticking with their tried and true formula of loading up on special guests, they have created another solid album. The artists making appearances this time around include Fat Lip from The Pharcyde, The Klaxons, Midlake, and Willy Mason who are all amazing in their own right and combined with the beats of the Chems, provide us with some pretty interesting tracks. The content of this album is just as diverse as the guest artists performing on it which allows The Chemical Brothers to hold their title as one of the most interesting and inventive electronic artists to date.

Dappled Cities Take Over USA

Friday, July 6th, 2007

One of the most original and endearing bands to hit the rock scene are Sydney’s Dappled Cities (formerly known as Dappled Cities Fly) and they are about to embark on the first proper US tour. They’ve popped in and out for big festivals like CMJ and SXSW but have never treated us to more than a couple of shows here and there. This is all about to change next Friday when Dappled move to New York City for six months and start a whirlwind tour with the likes of Tokyo Police Club and the Fratellis. If you like The Shins and The Flaming Lips, you will surely love Dappled. Make sure to check out one of their amazing live performances while you can!

Lo-Fi-Fnk Bring On The Swedish Party

Friday, July 6th, 2007

Who knew that Swedish music could be so fun? Lo-Fi-Fnk not only look like 12 year-old children (they are actually in their mid-twenties), they are also behind some of the most youthful and unpretentious party jams I’ve heard in awhile. Listening to any track from their debut album Boylife is a guaranteed mood-booster. Give them a listen.

Simian Mobile Disco USA Live Debut

Friday, July 6th, 2007

If you’re into indie dance music at all, chances are you are pretty into Simian Mobile Disco. This electronic duo from the UK is comprised of members from the now defunct rock band Simian and they have been causing quite a stir lately with their lively DJ sets and hugely popular remixes. This weekend, SMD will be making their live debut at a few select parties on the east coast. Sure, they have criss crossed the country as DJ’s, but we have never been lucky enough to see them perform a live show.
See you on the dance floor!

Kanye and Daft Punk (??!)

Kanye West - Stronger

I guess this day was bound to come sooner or later…Kanye West trying to steal some of the legendary greatness that is Daft Punk. This new video for West’s new single Stronger features a slowed down sample of the classic song from the world’s greatest electro duo. The video steals the Daft Punk aesthetic as well, just in a poorly executed way. Sure, it does feature two robots (who I guess are supposed to be Daft Punk?) but it is a far far way from the innovative visual spectacles that are real Daft Punk videos. Flashing Japanese script, dressing up Cassie like a geisha and having Kanye wear “avant garde” sunglasses do not make a video creative. I’m sorry, but Hype Williams is no Michel Gondry.

Bat For Lashes- The New Indie Queen

Bat For Lashes

Is it just me or has English singer songwriter Natasha Kahn, a.k.a. Bat For Lashes exploded out of nowhere? This imaginative (and slightly odd) visionary of indie folk was barely a blip on the US music radar until this summer. Now she is all the tastemaker community can talk about. If you have not yet heard this beautiful songstress, jump on the bandwagon immediately because she is about to embark on her first big American tour this month. It is only a matter of time before she is selling out huge concert halls so take advantage of her minor obscurity now and attend what are sure to be some very intimate and memorable performances.
