Top 5 Blogs by Musicians

Here are my picks for the top 5 blogs written by music artists. These are not just “what’s new” sections on a band’s website, but regularly-updated, interesting blogs written by musicians.

Who made the list?

5. Roger McGuinn - Formerly of The Byrds, Roger McGuinn writes an interesting blog that shares songs from days gone by on a monthly basis - in mp3 format. The most recent post features an unpleasant picture to go with “The Butcher’s Boy,” but it’s worth a click!

4. Moby - Moby’s journal touches on a lot of political topics and the kind of issues you expect to hear about from Moby. I like how his personality comes through in his writing. There’s something I find very likeable about Moby.

3. Amanda Palmer - Of Dresden Dolls fame, Amanda Palmer writes about life and making music in an engaging way. She also includes a lot of little videos of the music-making process. The way she parenthetically mentions what music is playing in the cafe where she writes reminds me of the notes we used to write in junior high, interspersed with lyrics.

2. John Mayer - Here’s one I just discovered today. John Mayer writes skillfully about all sorts of topics, from Jimi Hendrix to global warming.

1. David Byrne - And in the #1 spot is David Byrne. He writes thoughtful posts on a wide variety of topics, including “Sociology/Anthoroplogy” and “Philosophical Musings.” This is a blog that really stands on its own two feet, the fame of the blogger aside.

***

I’m sure there are many other great blogging musicians. Do you have a favorite? Share it in the comments!

This Top 5 post has been part of the Top 5 Writing Project - and it’s been fun!
